How Chronic Pain Changes Behavior

From a blog post by Dr. Julie Chen, Integrative Medical Doctor

"Based on a study published in Plos One on Oct. 12, 2011 by researchers in Rome, Italy, it seems that people suffering from pain exhibited a greater self-centered perspective aimed at maximizing self-gain. What's interesting about this study is that it suggests that physiological states may play a significant role in higher order interpersonal behavior and social interactions.

Within this study, their results showed that the "feeling of pain makes an individual less inclined to behave according to social norms that regulate most social and economic interactions."

This study is consistent with the findings of a previous study from the Iowa Gambling Task looking at chronic back pain patients, and there was an association of greater intensity of pain being associated with higher rate of egocentric bias and reduction of the capacity to react emphatically toward others.

However interesting these findings are, it is not to suggest that all pain-sufferers tend to be egocentric or self-centered. The important point that this study and the Iowa Gambling Task study showed is that there is an association between physiological bodily states and our social and economic higher order behavioral states."

Do you see that from this that chronic pain changes one's behavior? And that removing interference to the central nervous system that controls the subconscious which controls the body's functions leads to healing?

Each time you receive a B.E.S.T. (Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique) adjustment we are clearing your central nervous system of interference that creates chronic pain. And then you receive instruction on how to take care of yourself in between visits. Restoring you to the perfection with which you were made is possible with your commitment and the technology we possess body/mind/spirit.

You are in charge of your healing, not someone else. If you are ready to change what is not working you can heal. But you must be ready to do something new. Opening for healing can be scary but the alternative is staying stuck in the stuff you have now. There is some lag time between your decision to heal and change and the change actually showing up physically. Sometimes it's a breath away, sometimes it takes a concerted effort by individuals you allow into your life to help keep you on the healing track. Either way it's worth the effort to live without pain and enjoying life.

Osteoporosis and Alternative Healing

Osteoporosis and Alternative Healing

Here’s how this works. When the body’s normal metabolism is to make acid, becomes overloaded with acid, through diet or stress, it will leach calcium out of the bones to counteract the acid causing osteoporosis.

Overloading of acid through the diet comes from protein, made of amino acids, and fat, made from fatty acids, either by eating too much or not having it broken down properly in the body. Acid is a negatively charged ion and minerals are positively charged. So in order to not excrete acid, which would be painful, the body has to buffer the acid with something alkaline. Minerals are alkaline and the largest amount of mineral in the body is calcium. So if the body needs it and can’t get it anywhere else it is leached from the bone, hence osteoporosis.

Eggs and bacon or donuts and coffee for breakfast, hamburger and fries for lunch and maybe the same thing for dinner is a very protein and fat heavy diet. This is the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.). And it is sad! Vegetables and especially green veggies are the best for counteracting the S.A.D. diet.

Also add in stress, which increases acidity in the body.
Think of this: if each child were given, in health class in grade school, lessons on how to handle stress, through breathing and visualization, what a world this would be! Teaching children how to effectively handle stress gives them power to create the health they want. It’s starting to happen but it’s not widespread.

Here’s a great practice you can try for stress relief!

You can use 4 count breathing at any time to handle any stress! It’s easy.
  • Count to 4 using “1 one thousand, 2 one thousand, 3 one thousand, 4 one thousand” while you breathe in,
  • then hold in for 4 counts,
  • exhale for 4 counts and
  • hold the breath out for 4 counts.

This is simple but can regulate your fight or flight response, which increases acid easily and naturally in 16 seconds!

You can also eat at least 75% veggies and fruit and 25% protein and fat at mealtime as well. This will assure that you are getting many alkaline foods. And eat alot of green veggies. Remember the greener you are the better!

These simple steps will help you create a life without chronic pain and suffering. You can stay off osteoporosis drugs that give many additional effects besides what they are marketed for AND you can have the health you want in body, mind and spirit!

Alternative Care for Chronic Pain

How thoughts can heal chronic pain.

Have you suffered from chronic pain for years thinking nothing can be done?

You might think this because you were told, “Nothing can be done.” by a doctor.
But it’s not true!
In fact there is never a time that nothing can be done.
You have the power to heal at all times.
What you don’t have is the knowledge to use this power.

The power of healing does not require extensive training or degrees or even belief! How can that be true? Think of your television. If you had to believe that it would turn on for it to work or you had to describe how it worked for you to enjoy it would you be able to? What you have to do is push a button. You don’t even have to believe that the button will turn on the tv for it to do so.

Your body/mind/memory/spirit is really the same as that TV. You can use it or ignore it.

Here are simple steps that you can use to create healing right now.
  1. Think of a time in your life when you felt the most unconditional love, at-one-ness, or peace
  2. While thinking of that take inventory of every texture, color, sensation, whether you are with others or alone, indoors or outdoors, night/day. See in your mind’s eye exactly what that idea or memory looks like, feels like, smells like, tastes like.
  3. Now notice how your body feels in that moment when you are thinking of this time in your life or of what you are imagining. Do you feel warm? Peaceful? Happy? Relaxed?

THIS IS HEALING!

When you put your attention on something that creates good feeling in you, you are doing healing. When you put your attention on whatever is bothering you it will intensify.
Make sure to check your feelings and notice if it is a good feeling or negative feeling.

The body’s physiology will change with every emotion.

Create good feelings and use your healing power whenever you like.
Some call this “alternative” but really what’s the alternative?

A Holistic Perspective of Arthritis

What causes arthritis? A holistic perspective.
The word arthritis is the combination of arthro- meaning joint and –itis meaning inflammation, hence inflammation of the joint.

So what is the cause of inflammation? Think of it as too much heat.
The inflammatory process can begin in any number of ways. Too much protein in the diet that goes undigested can cause the body to overwork and create a histamine reaction, what most people think of as allergic reaction. The body may not
have the enzymes to break down protein and therefore it becomes an antagonist to the body’s normal processes.
In Eastern healing paradigms too much heat means there is also somewhere in the body that has not enough heat. The body is always striving for balance. If there is too much energy in one place there will be not enough energy elsewhere.

But let’s look at the CAUSE.
So far I’ve mentioned only physical symptoms and reactions. We are more than physical. We are spiritual beings. We experience energy in many forms, electrical, magnetic, chemical, emotional and spiritual. Try this on and see if it has any meaning for you:

Everything happens in spirit first and then manifests physically.

When we look at our physical afflictions from that perspective we must address what is happening spiritually in our lives to create the health and vitality we seek. Our thinking creates what we experience in our life.
If you are criticized or criticize others think of how that feels in the body. Constraints on our actions and thinking will help us avoid the criticism. So we are not feeling free and able to move without thinking of the criticism. Imagine this happening over a long period time. The constant criticism we have in our daily thoughts, when we look in the mirror, when we see any media with “conventionally” beautiful women or men. In fact we can be bombarded by criticism from ourselves and others. Now we want to move but over the last 40-50 years we have learned to criticize subconsciously so even though we don’t actively think the thoughts the pattern is established and the reaction is unconscious. We criticize.

The Joints move our bodies. Joints help us be free in the world and to move in it easily and effortlessly. But if the subconscious criticism continues the constraints can become physical. Pain and stiffness result.

We must be in forgiveness to ourselves for allowing those subconscious patterns to affect us negatively in order to be free of the subconscious criticism, fear of being unloved and resentment toward ourselves and others who did not protect us from this.

So I urge you, in your affliction, to repeat this affirmation.

“I am love. I now choose to love and approve of myself. I see others with love.” Repeat it with “I”, “You”, “Lots of people” and “your name”. This helps it to go into the subconscious. Without argument from your “educated” mind - the one the criticizes.
Release your attachment to your old thoughts.

Let go of preconceived notions.
Allow yourself a new way of thinking about yourself and others.
Feel the lightness that comes from freedom from criticism.

How to get out of the way

One of the most powerful prayers I have ever prayed has come as a result of complete surrender to a difficult situation that I could not change. I was so distraught by my bonus-daughter's(we use this term instead of step because of it's positivity) behavior and lifestyle that I could no longer participate in her life.
First, she didn't really want me in it because of the shame that she was carrying and second, I was so tired of trying and hoping and being let down that I could no longer carry on in the same way I had.

Many people in relationships where one person is self destructive, keep hoping that things will change but they must realize it is not within their power to change another. How many times have we heard this? You can't change others, you can only change yourself, but keep going into the breach thinking, "this time will be different. This time it will make a difference." But it doesn't. Then it becomes enabling and the shame pit gets deeper and deeper.

So here I was at the end of my rope worn out emotionally and feeling sad. I found myself sitting in a bookstore cafe in Fairfield, Iowa. I had taken a lunch break from working with patients and found myself sitting in the self-help section of the shop. And to my right was a book title that caught my eye, "The Dynamic Laws of Prayer" by Catherine Ponder. Ms. Ponder is a prolific writer and minister of the Unity Church. I already had several of her books and didn't know this one even existed! I opened the book and found the Prayer of Release.

This prayer will save you all kinds of time, trouble and heartache. She writes in the chapter The Prayer of Cleansing about this Prayer of Release, "You must cleanse yourself of possessively clinging to other people in your life, telling them what to do in the name of "love," if you want your own prayers to be answered."

That really hit home! It described exactly what I had been doing with my bonus-daughter. And here is the prayer that helped me finally let go:

I fully and freely release you. I loose you and let you go.
I let go and let God have his way in your life.

That's it. Short, sweet and to the point. USE THIS PRAYER. If you have something or someone in your life that is not responding in a healthy way YOU need to let go. This doesn't mean you don't want them to get well but it releases YOU and your "need" to make them change. Everyone has their own path to walk, we cannot walk it for someone else. When you release others to their own path it is surprising what can now take place.

Oh and my bonus-daughter is now happy, healthy and fully engaged in a wonderful life!

What's pH got to do with Anxiety and Depression?

For years I have been introducing people to the concept of pH regulation in the body. pH is the potential for hydrogen. But what it means in health is how acid or alkaline our body is at any given time. I have been checking saliva pH during exams for years in order to show people how their emotions play a pivotal role in our body's regulation.

The body creates acid in normal metabolism. It also creates acid with negative thinking, stress and exercise. But this negative thinking can really cause many problems with acid and the body gets overwhelmed and then moves calcium from the bones into fluids to counteract the acid and relieve the body of high acid. Too bad it starts the process of osteoporosis!

Now a study from the University of Iowa, shows it! This study shows that pH effects the emotions and how the brain functions. The article published by Scientific American describes how this is demonstrated. It also re-enforces that exercise plays a key role in helping anxiety-attack and depression sufferers neutralize the acid build up in the brain actually causing anxiety attack.

There is help for anxiety. A combination of Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique and Emotional Freedom Technique were used to neutralize subconscious emotional memory override and to stop the continuation of the physiology of fear.

Here's what a practice member says, "I have had better feelings and haven't had any anxiety attacks and back pain no longer exists."

This person had an attack on the adjusting table during a visit one day and we were able to get it under control and dissipate it painlessly and without drugs. The side effect was relief and empowerment to heal oneself.

Now that's a side effect that anyone would love to have!

And then a miracle happened...

Robert was the most happy-go-lucky guy I know. When I saw him on Saturday after many years of being away, he was not the same man I once knew. And then a miracle happened...

Let me assure you, it is an honor to be in the presence of healing.
Thank you Robert for sharing yourself with others!
